Since
Herr Georges Méliès visited the moon at the beginning of the last century,
there have been many attempts to do likewise by other directors who were
fascinated by the incredible space travel and bizarre landscapes and creatures
that Herr Méliès showed in his masterpiece.
However, this was not an easy task at all, as illustrated by the story
of Herr Vasili Zhuravlyov who, because of political censorship, endured much
frustration and many delays in sending a communist manned spaceship to the moon. He finally was able to make his dream come
true in the late year of 1936 under the now extinct Stalinist U.S.S. R.
Such
a complicated space travel project is depicted powerfully in “Komicheskiy Reys:
Fantasticheskaya Novella” ( “Cosmic Journey” ), a very interesting and
inventive sci-fi film with special effects that are very different from those today but are still skillfully
done.
Herr Zhuravlyov does not let the
propaganda background sink his artistic intentions, certainly a task-given the
times-that may have been more difficult than actually sending someone to the
moon.
Obviously
the political background can’t be ignored in the film, so there are many
communist references in it, the most significant being that the spacecraft that
finally lands on the moon is called “Josef Stalin” and of course there is the
film’s message about the power and accomplishment of technical research in the
U.S.S.R. but this is acceptable in terms of the story.
The
art direction and space imagery of the film is certainly astounding, including
beautiful and imaginative décors and models, suggesting these supposedly
futuristic times of the, Ahem… mid 40’s of the last century. Especially remarkable is the travelling
effect wherein the two U.S.R.R. spacecrafts are shown in detail in the hangar
and of course the moon décors, showing a mysterious and deserted planet
reminiscent of l Herr Méliès . The
cosmonauts will have an extra and dangerous mission trying to send a radio
message to the Earth ( well… it is more correct to say U.S.R.R. ) in order to
let them known that finally the spacecraft has landed. There is also a big problem with the oxygen
tank but there is a light side too as we see the cosmonauts walking on the moon
(via animation), a sequence that gives the film an air of charming fantasy.
“Komicheskiy
Reys…” is a very imaginative oeuvre, a remarkable picture full of fantasy and
imaginative technical resources, an excellent example of the space race between
cinematographers.
And
now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German
Count must moon around as usual.

Desde
que Herr Georges Méliès viajara a la luna a principios del siglo pasado,
numerosos fueron los directores y sus intentos, con mayor o menor fortuna, en
repetir dicho viaje espacial después de haber quedado fascinados éstos con tan
increíble viaje, sus extraños paisajes lunares, así como las extrañas criaturas
que Herr Méliès nos mostraba en su obra maestra.
Pero
ciertamente no era ésta una tarea fácil, como ciertamente sabía Herr Vasili
Zhuravlyov, el cual, después de varios frustrados y postergados intentos, pudo
finalmente enviar una nave tripulada espacial y comunista a la luna, todo un
sueño que el realizador soviético pudo cumplir en el tardío año de 1936, debido
al hábito censor imperante en la extinta Unión Soviética estalinista.
Éste
complicado proyecto espacial se muestra detalladamente en “Komicheskiy Reys:
Fantasticheskaya Novella”, un más que interesante filme de ciencia ficción
repleto de imaginación, el cual visto hoy en día, después del tiempo
transcurrido desde su estreno, gana en interés y consideración, precisamente
por sus ingenuos logros técnicos, debido éstos a la habilidad artística de Herr
Zhuravlyov para llevar a cabo un filme de éstas características durante la era
estalinista, consiguiendo finalmente que el poso propagandístico del filme no
afectara demasiado a las intenciones artísticas de la película, una tarea
ciertamente complicada ésta si se compara con el envío de una nave tripulada a
la luna…
Obviamente
el poso político del filme no puede ser del todo ignorado, pues hay numerosas
referencias en el mismo, siendo la más significativa el que la nave espacial
que finalmente aluniza en el satélite de la tierra se llame “Josef Stalin”,
además de un inherente mensaje sibilino durante todo el filme acerca de la
poderosa capacidad técnica que podía tener la U.R.S.S. a la hora de poder
conseguir tan complicada misión espacial, aunque todo ello sea en términos
aceptables para la historia que se narra en el filme.
El
imaginario y la dirección artística de la película es ciertamente sorprendente,
incluyendo imaginativos decorados y maquetas, consiguiendo ésas transmitir un
futuro inminente ( los años 40 del siglo pasado…), destacando especialmente un
travelling en donde se muestra las dos naves espaciales comunistas,
deslizándose la cámara por el hangar en donde están depositadas éstas, sin
olvidarse igualmente de los efectos especiales y los decorados lunares, con
reminiscencias los últimos al filme de Herr Méliès, mostrando un inquietante y
desierto planeta en donde los cosmonautas tendrán además que afrontar una
peligrosa e inesperada misión al tener que pasearse por toda la superficie lunar
desde su cara oculta hasta la visible desde la Tierra ( más bien, desde la
U.R.S.S. ) y así poder enviar un mensaje de radio en donde se informa de su
alunizaje, sin contar además con una inesperada avería en el abastecimiento de
oxígeno de la nave, un paseo lunar que se lleva a cabo mediante secuencias
animadas las cuales consiguen dar al filme, más aún si cabe, un aire de
peculiar y encantadora fantasía.
“Komicheskiy
Reys…” resulta ser un filme muy imaginativo, una destacable obra repleta de
fantásticos e imaginativos recursos técnicos, todo un excelente ejemplo de la
disputada carrera espacial entre directores silentes.
Y
ahora si me lo permiten, les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este conde
germánico está, como viene siendo habitual, en la luna.
