"Lorna Doone" (1922) By Maurice Tourneur

Continuing with a short Herr Maurice Tourneur film programme at the Schloss theatre and due to the fact that these are modern and strange times and in accordance with this and having in mind the aristocratic conservatism, it is always better and safer to invest in silent secure stocks and forget those risky and changeable talkie shares. For that reason it is always an excellent investment to watch any Herr Maurice Tourneur silent film.

“Lorna Doone” (1922) is another excellent work of the French director that belongs to his American period. The story is set in old Britain and is an interesting international Saxon mixture based on a famous and classic oeuvre written by Herr Richard Doddridge Blackmore, a novel that obviously this German count hasn’t read because the first edition didn’t include any illustrations.

But fortunately Herr Tourneur’s silent film adaptation of that book provides plenty of illustrations that often resemble paintings. They film compositions are evocative, dramatic and beautiful, the kind of visuals for which the French director is well-known and they are perfectly done with a strong sense of background helped greatly by Herr Henry Sharp’s sharp cinematography.
Herr Tourneur’s direction and the cinematography, combined with the superb art direction that is characteristic of the French director makes for a dramatic exercise in romanticism.

Although it is a short sequence at the beginning of the film, the first meeting as children between Lorna and John, is especially beautiful and remarkable and a perfect excuse for this German aristocrat to commend the delicacy and mastery that Herr Tourneur always demonstrates when he directs children ( those evil little creatures ); it is not a very easy task to try to dominate those miniature demons and achieve good and natural performances while avoiding insipidness or too obvious acting. The magic innocence and mystery of childhood is a usual subject in many Herr Tourneur films. It is a hard job but the French director always triumphs when he explores that primal and fascinating early age.

Besides the film has plenty of action, one of those classical adventure films full of wicked bandits who do wrongs that must be righted not to mention a larger than life love story that defies conventionalism or social class differences; that is to say, an immortal historical romantic drama.

All the merits of “Lorna Doone” can be appreciated nowadays thanks to the excellent film work restoration by the youngsters at “Kino”, a superb effort available in one of those modern discs that the longhaired likes so much and it includes a beautiful and delicate score composed and arranged by Dame Mari Lijima .

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must keep away the Doones from the Schloss surroundings.

"The Blue Bird" (1918) By Maurice Tourneur

As it is well-known among silent film connoisseurs, the fine Arts were an essential influence on silent films in general and Herr Maurice Tourneur’s work in particular. His beautiful oeuvres gave him fame and prestige around the world from his French period in the mid 10’s to his career in the USA.

“The Blue Bird” (1918) tells the story of two poor children, Mytyl and Tyltyl, who are led by the fairy Berylune in the search, around a fantastic world, for the blue bird of happiness.
The film belongs to Herr Tourneur’s American silent film period, and in this movie it is possible to watch all his artistic virtues in full display. This early astounding production is striking even today for its great artistic merits. The film was based on a book written by the Belgian poet Herr Maurice Maeterlinck and maybe Herr Tourneur during his young days could have illustrated it due to his earlier career as a book illustrator or… MEIN GOTT!!! Perhaps he even read it! In any case, Herr Tourneur adapted and transferred the fairy tale story to the silent screen in a superb way.

The film exudes classicism and even romanticism, artistic subjects that Herr Tourneur know very well how to employ in the world of fantasy. There is amazing art direction, elaborate decors and costumes and witty technical effects, not to mention the inventiveness that can be seen in every shot of the film and in the beautiful, exemplary photography of Herr John van den Broek and Lucien Andriot that captures the atmosphere of the classical fairy books through a cinema lens in a masterly way.

Probably the story can be considered as affected, even innocent in this modern time but even that has a special value in artistic terms for this film; that baroque taste and out of date atmosphere fit perfectly in the story that moves from the real to the dream world, from the real to the unreal. Herr Tourneur’s interpretation of this fantastic universe is a prodigious work, imaginative and inventive and shining with brilliant artistic merits.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must listen to the gracious caw of the Schloss crows.

"Sumurun" (1920) By Ernst Lubitsch

During the silent film history, there were famous and important pairs who worked together in varying degrees in their film careers: Herr Stiller and Dame Garbo, Herr Pabst and Dame Brooks, Herr Griffith and Dame Gish or Herr Ego and Dame Swanson.
One of these remarkable silent open marriages was Herr Ernst Lubitsch and Dame Pola Negri, who worked together in many important silent productions, especially during the German period of the Teutonic director.

“Sumurun” (1920) was one of those early lavish UFA productions, based on a Herr Max Reinhard’s 1910 stage pantomime, which gave prestige to Germany’s greatest film company and provided the chance to decisively open the world film markets to the German productions, specially in Amerika, a distant and perilous country where afterwards, as many longhaired youngsters know, Herr Lubitsch will continue his successful career, becoming one of the most important directors in film history. In this same country Dame Pola will also make some films but with uneven results; for her, it was a short lapse in her career that she will afterwards resume in old Europe.

This German count mentioned that “Sumurun” was a lavish, opulent major budget film production as can be seen in the superb and astonishing décors and art direction due to the pair of hands, two for each one, of Herr Ernö Metzner und Kurt Richter. Such Teutonic magnificence and exuberance is just what the story demands; a tale involving a tangled love triangle set in an archetypical and fascinating East.

This German count also must mention that in addition to Dame Negri the film also features Herr Paul Wegener, Dame Aud Agede Nissen and Herr Lubitsch himself. Pola has a role that’s perfect for her: sensual, adventuresome, defiant and full of untameable spirit. The film’s parallel stories sometimes are confusing or digressive although it makes for a comprehensible mess since the various love conflicts in the film include unrequited passion, Eastern vengeance and unrestrained desires, all transpiring in an exotic landscape and making for a delicious extravagant film fantasy where the talent of the German director shines more that the Eastern sun.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count has an exotic appointment in East Germany.

"Rotaie" (1929) By Mario Camerini

Among the different sub-genres not usually recognized during the silent era, this German count can say there are some outstanding and remarkable oeuvres that can perhaps be called “industrial films”. These films emphasize the thrill of the city, the industrial rhythm of the machines that affects in one way or another the citizens who live in a new and modern society and had to confront new social challenges and a new way of life that began when WWI ended.

Having in mind those ruminations quoted by this Herr Von above, “Rotaie” (1929) is an Italian film that can be considered as one of those “industrial films”, a remarkable oeuvre in which a young couple lives in constant uncertainty, surrounded by a modern and inhuman city and its unscrupulous inhabitants and the couple finds their unconditional love in jeopardy.

Herr Mario Camerini, director of the film, moves the camera in a vivid, agile way ( flashback, travellings ), and during the first part of the film uses rapid fire editing to capture the atmosphere of the city. The movie also shows the influence of European avant-garde film and, in the shadowy night sequences, the notorious German cinema. The latter scenes depict the vulnerability and helplessness of the young couple during their erratic wandering around the city and skilfully capture an oppressive and mean atmosphere. In spite of all this there is hope for a new start for the couple when they have an unexpected stroke of luck that allows them to escape the disquieting night and end up in a totally different place: a luxurious hotel full of decadent people. However, though the building may be shiny, it nevertheless hides the same night darkness inside.

The psychological portraits of the different characters of the film are quite interesting. There are carefree, heartless and even dehumanized beings who will try to take advantage of the couple’s innocence and vulnerability. The two young people are aware of the dangers around them and consciously go with the tide, although at the end they will finally manage successfully to triumph over situations that almost put an end to their love. At last the tides of events drag them up to be a part of that new and industrial city turning them finally into a happy middle class couple.

“Rotaie” is a late silent that bears witness to the social changes and challenges of the big city. It is technically well structured and presents an interesting portrait of the uncertainties of a changing society entering a modern and industrial world.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must deal with a strike in the aristocratic factory at the Rhine.
