"Christophe Colomb" (1916) By Émile Bourgueois

“Christophe Colomb” was an early French-Spanish silent film co production (the French directed the film, Herr Emile Bourgueois, conceived the principal characters and wrote the story and the Spaniards did the rest, that is to say, the dirty work). The movie depicted the hazardous life of Chistophe Colombus, an Italian navigator who boasted of having discovered Amerika, that exotic and far away Continent. The naked true is that when he came there already there were many people of different cultures with terrible food habits (potatoes, tobacco, coffee) and horrible customs (jogging, voting Republican) that unfortunately were very soon were exported to the old continent.

This film production was a very expensive one for the time. The budget spent can be seen on the screen in the form of careful and special art design (meticulous showings of the Spanish court in historical surroundings with a lot of extras… no matter the historical accurate because after all this is fiction). Depicted in a prologue and five episodes are different periods of the Italian navigator’s life… from his childhood, his financial relationship with the Castilian Kings to the injustices he suffered until his death.

The most important aspect of this film it is that despite being a kind of biographical film, it is not a hagiographic one. It shows the dreams, contradictions and doubts of that important and historical celebrity as performed by a histrionic French actor named Georges Wague. He did the best he could. But for this German Count, it did not compensate for primitive direction, glaring room for some special effects and the need for some slight camera movements.

And now, if you'll allow me, I must temporarily take my leave because this German Count must discover the unknown and dangerous world beyond the Schloss.

“Christophe Colomb” fue una primeriza coproducción silente Hispano-Francesa ( los afrancesados dirigieron el filme, Herr Emile Bourgueois, interpretaron los principales personajes y escribieron la historia, dejando para los hispanos el resto, esto es, el trabajo sucio ); el filme narra la arriesgada vida de Cristóbal Colón, un navegante italiano que se jactaba de haber descubierto Amerika, ese exótico y lejano continente, cuando todo el mundo sabe que cuando ese Herr llegó allí ya había mucha gente de diferentes culturas y terribles hábitos alimenticios ( patatas, tabaco, café ) además de horribles costumbres ( practicar jogging, votar a los Republicanos ), hábitos éstos que desafortunadamente fueron muy pronto exportados al viejo continente.

Esta producción silente fue muy cara para la época y el presupuesto fue alegremente gastado, pudiendo ser éste contemplado en la pantalla en forma de una cuidadosa y especial dirección artística ( meticulosas escenas de la Corte hispana y sus peripecias por escenarios históricos rodeados de un montón de extras… no importado la fidelidad histórica pues después de todo esto es un filme de ficción ), distribuido en un prólogo y cinco episodios que abarcan diferentes periodos de la vida del navegante italiano, desde su infancia, sus relaciones financieras con los reyes de Castilla, hasta las injusticias que sufrió hasta su muerte.

El más importante aspecto de este filme es que a pesar de ser un filme pretendidamente biográfico, no es una obra hagiográfica; muestra los sueños, contradicciones y dudas de tan importante personaje histórico, interpretado éste por el histriónico actor francés George Wague, que hace lo que puede lo cual no es mucho para éste Conde germánico, como su primitiva dirección, incluyendo algunos efectos especiales y la necesidad de algún que otro movimiento más de cámara.

Y ahora si me lo permiten les tengo que dejar momentáneamente, pues este Conde germánico tiene que descubrir el ignoto y peligroso mundo que se halla más allá del Schloss.
